Humanity As Organism

Poor old stinking Humanity,

festering here and festering there,

uncertain whether it’s eating itself

or, something having usurped its essence,

it had to respond with destruction.

Is our trouble basically auto-immune?—

what’s making us sick, ourselves.

Or is it cancer, getting away?

Maybe we have to attack ourselves

to get rid of what’s making us fail.

Is it better to prattle nonviolence,

or instead to howl for more murder? War!

God knows. And what is God?—

Whatever happens for whatever reasons

at whatever time in Creation.
