History Is Watching

‘History is watching!’ the President says.

I thought History was past,

a story written by victors, perhaps,

subject to revision, perhaps,

matters of emphasis, etc.,

but basically over, except for study.

Now I find out it’s alive and watching.

Can it be that we’re already dead,

living a dream?—

and the dream we live in can see us too,

looking over our shoulders?

I stand corrected. I understand.

The rest of you understood all along.

Now everyone knows, even me!
